LOVING YOURSELF
[for Self Treatment]
One of the first things a practitioner is taught is that we are supposed to use the healing energy to heal ourselves first - then heal others. This makes sense. However, this is sometimes easier said than done.
One of the most frequent questions asked by Reiki practitioners is, "Why doesn't my energy work on me?" New and old students [even some teachers] find they run into problems when they try to give themselves a Reiki treatment. It works just fine on everyone else and they feel the healing energies so why doesn't it work on the practitioner?
This is the most predominant problem most new practitioners face - they can treat others with great affect yet when they try to treat themselves they feel nothing and there is no change.
There are several solutions to this problem:
1) Your energy will not work if you are in a lot of pain [mental, emotional or spiritual]. If you can get past the pain [block it, rise above it, forget it, or deaden it with painkillers] so that it doesn't bother you, then you can get the energy to run. When your emotions and feelings are involved it is more difficult to treat yourself unless you can reach a neutral state of being. If you are in a lot of discomfort from the pain and you are finding it hard to function then you need to seek treatment from someone else. Your energy will still run but it will not affect the relief you need as quickly as another who is not involved in your pain. There is no shame in seeking treatment from another and smart people realize this. If your ego is more important than pain relief then you have a lot of work to do on yourself. Most practitioners [thanks heavens] do not have inflated egos and I encourage them to do exchanges with each other, myself, or in a group practice session.
2) Many people claim to love themselves yet many are unaware of what it truly takes to love one's own self. Your love for yourself should be unconditional. If you can accept yourself as you are with all your faults and flaws, if you don't berate yourself for being overweight, skinny, your age, your hair, your teeth, etc. then you love yourself. To honestly love one's own self you will have no emotions involved when you think of your 'imperfections'. You will accept yourself as you are, in all your 'imperfections' and not give an emotional response to what you find 'imperfect'. [I'll use weight to explain, as it is the most common 'complaint' today.]
If you don't think you have to be perfect and you are not constantly forcing yourself to match magazine or celebrity figures or trying to "keep up with the Jones's" in body image. If you can accept yourself in all your imperfections and you are basically satisfied then you probably love yourself. I am not saying you wouldn't prefer to be a few pounds lighter or want to try a new hair colour just for a change. I am saying that a preference and a want [or a need] are two different things.
In a preference you might like to have something [there is no feeling attached to this, your thoughts and feelings are neutral, you can gain or lose but it doesn't really matter]. In a want or a need, you most definitely want the change [there are emotions attached to this, your feelings and thoughts are involved - anger, sorrow, depression, etc.]. 'Preferences' have no feelings and 'wants & needs' have feelings. When your thoughts about your imperfections involve feelings [an emotional response] of any form you are usually involved in a want or a need. Often a conscious change in word use, both vocally and in thought, can change the way you think about your desires.
Use the words, "I prefer", "I like" or "I wish" instead of "I want" or "I need". There is no reason a change has to be difficult [that's your belief system]. Changing how you react or act to given situations changes the results. The next time you talk about your weight you could say, "I would really like to lose ten pounds" or " I would prefer to be ten pounds lighter in weight" or "I hope I lose some weight, but if I don't, oh well. I'm fine the way I am". Funny thing about this, the person will often lose the weight they wanted to shed [within reason] just from changing their reaction to it with a change in thought.
3) Sometimes the energy won't work on you because of a mental block. This is easy enough to correct. Next time you want to heal yourself, think of someone that you care about very much, someone you truly love [a child, spouse, parent, friend, pet, etc.]. Think of them and feel the love you have for them, then quickly [gently] put your hands on yourself. The energy will already be running and will continue to do so. Once having tricked yourself like this you should have no further problems and this has often been the solution for many practitioners.
4) Sometimes it is the practitioner's perception that is off. In reality your energies are flowing when you put your hands on yourself but unfortunately we do not feel our own energies. [We don't consciously have to make ourselves breathe and feel the air go in and out of our lungs, yet we still breathe.] When our energies are new and we first begin to practice we do feel them but our bodies adjust quickly and then we no longer perceive them. If you feel better [calmer, more relaxed] after a self-treatment then your energies are flowing. If you are able to treat yourself for pain relief and the pain has been eased and/or you notice a difference because your hands become hot [or cold] then it is working. When our own bodies are in 'a greater need than normal' we can actually feel the energies coursing through us while the majority of other times we cannot.
5) If you are in a positive or neutral mind state as to the outcome of the healing. If you are not trying to make something change through a force of will. If you do not have certain or set expectations as to the outcome of the healing you will be far more effective with a healings outcome.
Preconceived ideas often lead to disappointment with the healings results. We are usually happy with any positive outcome if we have not decided before hand to have a set result - this is as it should be. Personally, I have seen several healers affect a positive change in health on their own bodies [including myself].
I will give myself a treatment just for the energy [of course I know it's working] and I love the tingling feeling I get after a length of time in which my body seems to have a cool, star dust like feeling [like 'Disney dust'] running through it. I have often used this same energy in the past to clean houses of negativity and to cleanse a person's body of impurities and to be able to experience this myself it quite neat.
