It is, therefore, neither positive nor negative per se, but rather is the combination of these qualities.The origin of Reiki can be traced back to ancient Tibet where it was used by the Llamas in their healings and meditations, thousands of years ago. Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan reintroduced Reiki in the mid 1800's. A story passed by word of mouth about this reintroduction follows.
It is said Dr. Usui was a minister who set out to discover more about the source of the ancient healing techniques of Jesus. He traveled around the world asking different religions and cultures what they knew of the miracles Jesus created, and if they could duplicate them. Each of those asked said they focused on the spiritual aspects of healing, not the healing of the body.
Dr. Usui learned several languages in order that he could obtain information from the various cultures, and through his studies he did uncover the knowledge yet still did not have the power to heal and then he had a 'religious experience'.
Usui sat upon a mountaintop for 21 days of fasting and meditation. On the 21st day he awakened to a darkened sky, and as he sat facing the east a bright light streamed across the heavens and surrounded him. He thought he had died and gone to Heaven because of the serene peace and love he felt - he was in a very euphoric state. He saw many bubbles in all the colours of the rainbow and a powerful bright white light, and gold Sanskrit letters which he understood to be the secret formula of Universal Life Energy. He memorized each letter as it came to him.
Upon leaving the mountaintop he hurt himself and was surprised [and pleased] to discover that he could heal himself with his touch. He went into a village and set up a practice to help heal the poor but found later to his disappointment that although he could heal them physically they were no better off than before. It was then that he realized healing the body was not enough, there had to be a healing of the spirit as well. It was decided at this time that Reiki would never again be given away but had to be exchanged for something so that people would recognize it's value and not take it for granted. Dr. Usui also came up with the Reiki precepts, principles and affirmations at this time.
Today, I estimate the number of Reiki Masters to be in the thousands. These individuals dedicate and commit their lives to honor and assist in the harmony and balance of the universe, and provide others with a means to balance their body, mind and spirit connection. *

These are the original notes that I received in my initiation [in all of its length, exactly as I received them]. I shortened the original story because of its length [it was a bit of a 'shaggy dog story'] and because I felt there was too much attention on the man. My original notes held little on the practice of Reiki itself but a lot of information on Dr. Usui, including several pictures, etc. Because the focus was more on the man than on healing I found a few times that practitioners lost their focus, instead of thanking God for this divine healing ability, they thanked and worshipped the man. Yes, be thankful he went to great lengths to discover how Jesus healed. Yes, be thankful that Dr. Usui reintroduced this forgotten ancient Tibetan healing art into the world and that he brought this healing technique to the Western world but let's not lose our focus. This is not a cult to follow Dr. Usui [nor will it be] but the focus is on healing with God's Divine Energy and helping others. I'm sure Dr. Usui would agree with me. Also, I have absolutely no idea WHEN these notes were written and I think the estimated numbers are very outdated. Of course, this is just my opinion.]
