ESSENTIAL OILS

NOTE: I have listed the target systems, use and cautions where I know them but unfortunately I do not know all of them. I will add in more oils and information as I find them. Please exercise caution when using any oils. The list I have composed is meant as a guide only.

HAWTHORN

Used for edema, especially due to cardiac insufficiency; joint and rheumatic pain due to circulatory stasis.

Target systems: circulatory.

Useage: internal, external.

Caution: this is a strong essential oil that can cause indigestion and can be over stimulating, especially in high doses. Use sparingly. Not recommended for children, pregnant, or nursing women.

 

HEATHER

Used as an antiseptic; diuretic; expectorant; for insomnia; gout & rheumatic pains; stomach aches; coughs & facial skin problems; constrict blood vessels & strengthen the heart; moderately raise blood pressure; stimulate the flow of bile & urine.

Target systems: respiratory, digestive, skin, circulatory.

Useage: internal, external.

 

HEARTSEASE

For eczema, acne; helps prevent capillary hemorrage; bronchitis, whooping cough; cradle cap in babies; weeping sores, insect bites & skin rashes.

Target systems: skin, respiratory.

Useage: external.

Caution: rich in saponino so high doses can cause nausea & vomiting.

 

HOLLY

Used as an astringent, diuretic; expectorant; stimulant; for gout, stones & urinary problems; for chronic bronchitis; rheumatism & arthritis; cleanse system of waste; for dyspepsia; skin irritations; relieve fatigue; stimulate mental & physical energy; blood purifier; break habits; for headaches, migraines, neuralgia & insomnia.

Target systems: respiratory, urinary, skin, neurological.

Useage: internal.

Caution: not recommended for children, pregnant, or nursing women.

 

HOPS

For nervous tension, anxiety, insomnia; irritable bowel syndrome; premature ejaculation; loss of appetite; menopausal emotional upsets; ulcers & slow healing wounds.

Target systems: neurological, digestive, urogenital [female], immune.

Useage: internal.

Caution: avoid with depression.

 

HYSSOP

Used for colds, flu, sore throats; digestive upsets, nervous stomach; bronchitis, coughs; anxiety; eczema & bruises; nervous exhaustion, melancholy.

Target systems: neurological, skin, immune.

Useage: internal, external.

Caution: excessive use of this essential oil can cause convulsions.

 

JASMINE

For nervous, circulatory or reproductive problems; emotional disturbances, fever, headaches, sunstroke, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, burning urethra, bleeding disorders, bacterial or viral infections, cancer of lymph nodes, cancer of bones, Hodgkin's disease.

Target systems: neurological, immune, circulatory.

Useage: external, inhalation.

Caution: severe chills.

 

JUNIPER

Used as a diuretic & relieves intestinal gas; urinary antiseptic; as a blood tonic; a stimulant, disinfectant, diaphoretic, carminative, analgesic, bacteriodical; for urinary, respiratory distress [especially asthma & allergies], nervous or digestive complaints; rheumatic & arthritic pain; skin rashes & inflammations.

Target systems: skin, digestive, respiratory.

Useage: internal, external, inhalation.

 

LARCH

Used on difficult wounds to promote healing; add for stimulating bath; wounds, sores & skin problems; as a diuretic; innumerable internal & external ailments eg tapeworm, bloody diarrhea, suppressed menstruation.

Target systems: skin, immune, digestive, circulatory.

Useage: internal, external.

Caution: use only small amounts as even moderate amounts can cause kidney damage internally, and swelling & blisters externally.

 

LAVENDER

Ideal for tension headaches & menopausal problems, as well as insomnia; digestive disorders; for a relaxing bath; as a compress to relieve aching joints, neuralgia, earache, headache, sinusitis, toothache; for migraines; as a steam inhalation for congestion & laryngitis; as a rub for coughs, muscular & rheumatic pain, or to bring labor up; inflammation, congestion; wounds & infections of the skin.

Target systems: respiratory, digestive, musculo-skeletal, vascular, skin.

Useage: external, inhalation.

Caution: None, but some individuals may be allergic to lavender flowers and the oil will induce the same allergic reactions.

 

LEMON

Used for indigestion; melancholy; nervous exhaustion, stress; swellings; massage for depression, anxiety, tension & chest congestion; fevers, chills; skin irritations, wounds, bruises; insect bites, insect repellant.

Target systems: skin, digestive, neurological.

Useage: internal, external, inhalation.

 

LICORICE

Used for arthritis, gastric inflammation and ulcers; asthma, bronchitis and chest coughs; aids recovery after steriod treatment.

Target systems: respiratory, circulatory.

Useage: internal

Caution: Aviod excessive or prolonged use with high blood pressure, pregnancy, liver cirrhosis, or if taking digoxin-based drugs.
